Debra Hyde Debra Hyde isn’t likely to stray too far from sex writing; it took her too long to find it in the first place. But she's fast making up for lost time. Today, you can find Hyde’s fiction in any number of erotica anthologies and at an increasing number of webzines. Just as notable, she documents sexuality news at her weblog, Pursed Lips and tracks her leather and literary life in her diary, From the Margins. Here at Scarlet Letters, she plans to continue her One Nightstand books column, write a cycle of Connecticut S/M stories, compile bibliographies of as many antiquarian erotica publishers as possible, and compose an occasional reflective piece of memoir.

On the surface, life for Debra consists of a conventional, nuclear family (replete with the trepidation of raising teenagers) and much writing solitude. But the recent body invasion of a tattooed vine across her lower back commemorates another facet of her life: her S/M relationship of five years with her Master. Together, they plan to add to the design in the coming years.

And now that hot flashes are upon her, Debra’s most interested in examining the life cycle and breadth of human sexuality. How she’ll do that in her short fiction and nonfiction writing and find time to write the two novels that swirl around in her head, she doesn’t know. Stick around and watch her juggle it all.

Under the Frog Bridge
Like that other word my grandmother would use, liebeskind.  But that word had dark beginnings.  "Nothing good will come of this," she had hissed to my mother when first she held me, before she welcomed me into the family with her kisses and her cooing. Liebeskind -- me, the child tainted by an accident and abandonment, cherished despite the shame. As the cock shuddered within me, I choked on my shame, knowing that that man’s orgasm had fulfilled my grandmother's old world prediction.

Cha0s and Creativity
Writing is a greedy creature.  It sucks you into its demands and then insists on your complete attention and dedication.  It’s egocentric.  Just like children.  When mine were little, I almost completely abandoned writing.  I tried writing short observational essays -- what would now be labeled creative nonfiction -- but no sooner would I draft something and the muse would hammer me for line edits, than my toddler son would take his toy hammer to my foot and demand equal time.

On Hallowed Ground
Mark's idea came to him during one day during a boring jack-off. In a brief mental epiphany -- the best of which always happened when it involved his dick -- the word sex lead to hooker, which led to Thomas Hooker. That was followed by the vision of Ramona's face, followed by his familiarity with her tight ass, followed by a quick tension, a long release, and a thick glob of cum which oozed onto his belly.

New Tricks
Ashamed of his penis size, a Japanese businessman hid behind a prosthetic dick during a call girl encounter. But the lovemaking's awkward and unsatisfactory, and when the call girl finds the cause of all the fumbling, she counsels the man about sexual honesty. Then she puts her mouth where his money is and genuinely cockworships him into erotic exhaustion. The author was the famed happy hooker, Xaviera Hollander, and I never forgot that story.

Parallel Thrills

Reading erotica and collecting erotica have a lot in common. Both are prurient attractions. They appeal to my favorite obsessive lusts - one for sex and the other for books. And both can get you labeled with the suffix mania (as in nympho- and biblio-) if you're not careful.

12.07.06: Scarlet Letters -- in case it isn't glaringly obvious -- is currently on an extended hiatus. The web has changed, we've changed, and we're trying to figure out how we both fit together now, which isn't a process we want to rush.

In the meantime, by all means, enjoy our years of past content, all of which still remain in the public and subscription areas.

If you're looking for more current SL-related content, you can have check out upcoming books from editor Heather Corinna and previous co-editor Hanne Blank, check out Heather's current sexuality sites, or explore sites through the femmerotic network. We hope to be back with you soon, as fresh, challenging and unexpected as ever.
